Journey into a book
Few things set my pulse racing like traveling to a new place. Sometimes that anticipation is the bad kind of pulse racing–I abhor airports, only tolerate flying as a means to an end, and need a mantra and someone’s hand to crush in minor turbulence. But nothing is as exhilarating as conquering something new, like rappelling for the first time down a 165-foot waterfall in a foreign country. Pumping blood invigorates the mind.
Unfortunately, it’s not always possible to physically travel to a new place or try something we’ve never done, but anything is possible in the books that we read. I have experienced prehistoric times as well as space-travel, raced the wind on the power of my magic, witnessed the atrocities of ancient and modern warfare, conquered enemies and faced fears and fallen in love more times than I can count–all within the confines of a book.
I have always loved reading. I would argue that regardless of your present stage of life, it is almost always possible to squeeze in time for reading–if you want to.
- Completely swamped at the office? Listen to an audiobook during your commute.
- College student? Take a 20 minute break from your studies to recharge with fiction. Try a novella or short story!
- Parent of young, demanding children? Read while you watch your children play, or read TO them. They’ll love the sound of your voice!
- Overwhelmed by an over-scheduled calendar? Take ten or twenty minute reading vacation at bedtime, early in the morning, or while you’re waiting for an appointment.
- Traveling for work? Download the latest from your favorite author and read on your phone.
- Unmotivated to catch up on the never-ending, mindless cleaning? Again with the audiobooks. Nothing keeps me engaged in drudgery like an escape into someone else’s problems.
Reading makes me happy. It calms me when I’m worried, cheers me when I’m down, and entertains me when I am bored. Plop me down in the middle of a bookstore and I will happily lose myself there until someone or something brings me back to reality. I love to share that joy with others by helping them find a book that they can enjoy.
